I found these big caps on ebay and I'm wondering if they're worth the money. Would they be good for pulse discharges? A lot of caps on ebay are listed as good pulse/tc caps when they actually aren't.

Only two of them seems to come in a insulated casing, bushings seems thick enough, but could still be PFC caps.

But I do not know about chemical capacitors.

"Very old" and General Electric leads to PCB's if they use any oil. I wouldn't buy anything but polypropylene caps for TC usage. You can imagine a boiling capacitor splashing PCB oils everywhere while you run for your live and scream NOOOO.

Would they be any good for blowing stuff up?
.02 µF at 28KV doesn't seem like that much energy. How many joules is that?

Did anyone notice that they have an "800 pps" rating?

PPS is pulses per second, and it suggests they were used in a pulsed power application, like a radar PFN or whatever. So, might be worth a try in a Tesla coil, although that's more stressful than a radar application, where they may not see any voltage reversal.

I bought 4 of them for my big coil I'm building. Same capacitor bank used in the Warthog coil. Google Warthog tesla coil. Look like dang good caps to me for the price.

I personally wouldn't use them for the following reasons:

1. Old
2. Oil based (PCB likely) Capacitors
3. Old-Oil based means they likely have dielectric that has dried up leaving less than desirable capacitors
4. Pretty shoddy / rusty looking - Another sign to be wary of these capacitors. If they were very new looking, then they might be okay, but not in the condition as advertised.
5. Big bushings, despite the spec rating, imply a filter type capacitor - not a heavy discharge capacitor. The typical application for this type of capacitor is for filtering high voltage in tube based radar transmitters. Basically, used to filter the ripple (droop) on a cathode, or depressed collector, etc... Not for repetive discharge of the type of large TC would see. True pulse discharge capacitors have no bushings.

My recommendation: PASS

Plus, they're expensive too for what they are.
