I am constructing the Steve Ward dual 811a coil. One of my other hobbies is woodworking and i wanted to make sure i don't render my coil useless so maybe you guys can steer me in the right direction. I have finished the design for the enclosure. Imagine a wooden box housing every component. Can metal fasteners (nails) be used in the construction of the box? I'm sure they would be out of range of spark length, but maybe there is something i'm missing.
Most importantly I wanted to stain/paint the wood and apply varnish to achieve a nice gloss. Will this be a problem? Any particular brands i should use or would i be ok since i'm out of spark range.

All I did was to insure I had no metal above the wooden plate where my primary form is mounted, other than that you can use all the nails you want, just keep it out of the primary and secondary as they will affect the field and maybe even draw enough of the field to set things on fire.
Use whatever wood varnish you know will look good, maybe try to find out if its one that can hold static electricity and avoid that.
