Yeah, also would a prewound transformer work or are you intending to wind it yourself? (IMO don't even bother trying to wind any transformer like this.) Personally I recommend an ignition transformer because of the frequency you mentioned. Also their insulation is already plenty high enough to output 30kV. And with the iron core, you can dump alot of energy through it before you need to upgrade, while still being able to run at lower power if necessary.

Hi, I had done something like this with an iron core and a PIC. Suppose you use a PIC,you would need some kind of faraday cage.Else the micro used to reset ,when I bring my finger close to it.The finger was like an antenna,coupling the RF from the sparks into the micro's die,I guess. You can wind the txfer yourself but its very tedious,and you would need some kind of basic DIY winding machine atleast.
Just to take up Dr.Gigavolts offer : 4. Load Impedance your driving into 6. Pulse Variability (variation on top of the pulse - do you want a clean pulse, or don't care if it rings with several kV amplitudes)
Any ideas on how to go about decreasing the load impedance I can drive and reducing the ringing. I know its a vague query, but some general pointers on what would give the maximum effect, would be good enough for me. I have a pulse width of about 7% on 30Hz to give me a 30kV.
