Contact Science First of NY. They have VDG belts which are designed for VDGs and they're not very expensive. These belts are optimum and work extremely well. They're about 1.5" wide and made of neoprene.

The parts lists is here:

Just call them up and tell them what part number you want, and they'll sell it to you over the phone.

Best bet is to buy the entire roller assembly for them (for their largest VDG). Probably cost you about $20.00 total.

I don't really know, is it right this way?

I haven't been able to fid a belt that is suitable to the size of VDG that i'm hoping for. The VDG I'm making has a form that is 6" diameter and the elt will be 4-5" X six feet (length only if it were cut and lain in a straight line).

Hi All,
I have used the Exercise belt material and while it works the stretch can cause tracking problems because when the speed increases the belt stretches and doesn't travel straight anymore. a commonly available material is ordinary nylon window shade material. It cuts fairly easy and can be connected with a number of adhesives and most important doesn't stretch. The output is slightly less than with rubber belts but still is decent. My VDG has a polystyrene lower roller and a PVC upper roller. I will upload pics if you desire.

Above all the belt must be insulating and non conductive because they have to hold off hundreds of thousands of volts. Mcmaster car has a lots of different rubber. Even nylon cloth might work of you could tension it. If your rolers are crowned that will help keep the belt on the rolers. science first also has 200kv table top generators kits for around 120$. they will rase hair. I have also seen a large Van De Graph on ebay and he sells balls maby he will divolge his source

Correct me if I'm wrong, but silk was "The original"(tm) VDG belt material. Not ideal, but something to consider.

Well ya could have asked me ya turkey!
Perhaps you've forgotten the story about how before I built Tesla coils, I built Van de Graaff generators and I stumbled onto a belt material and pickup mechanism that generated so much electrostatic energy that I couldn't walk within 3 feet of the damn thing without it locking onto me, and it would zap you with quite a jolt if you were within 2 feet. I know you must remember because that tied in with the story about the water bottle that I sat on top of it for a minute for lack of a better place to put it, and when I picked it up it gave me the biggest jolt I had ever felt in my life.
Anyway, the magic material is Tyvek, and I have a big roll of it, and you are welcome to as much of it as you like my friend.. Much easier to deal with than rubber or Theraband, which I have a roll of too.
Don't forget about your mentor, young padiwan...

Thanks, man. That's very helpful of you. I guess I'll be looking into getting some of that from you.
