Is 24 AWG too thick for the Mini SSTC?

sorry, on a 4in, 10.5in form?

I would say yes way too thick. Anything over 27 awg makes a huge difference in performance on the same size former.

Well, Steve Ward used 26 gauge IIRC for a somewhat low frequency. I would just use 28 gauge, because it is so cheap. Also, i would say 10 inches would be much to short. Maybe 16 inches?

Link2
That is the wire i use. All of there magnet wire is double build, and i believe there is some way to get them to give you what ever color wire you want! You get 4,000 feet of 28 gauge for $32 and 2600 feet of 26 gauge for $32.

Although it sounds like 28 gauge is the better deal, they are matched due to the fact that both spools of wire are the same weight.

16 inches of winding on a 4 inch form with 28 gauge wire results in about 200khz resonant frequency. 16 inches of winding on a 4 inch form with 26 gauge wire results in about 250khz resonant frequency.

You choose which you want ;)

Its not too thick. It will work fine depending on the type of secondary you make. Its all a trade-off between size, geometry, etc...

My mini SSTC (4MHz) uses 20AWG wire and is wound on a toilet paper tube.

well, it looks nice.

dr. g i thought you would tell me to head back to the drawing board!

apparently it's doing all right. anyways to claify,

currently wound 467 turns or so 4in for 10.25 in
this should work for the power levels in Steve Ward's design yes?

it looks good, i am getting a nice toroid to go on top...

cheers!

467 turns? If its for a SSTC, I dont recomend it, you will have much troubles to get it working (GDT Drivers overheat, mosfets exploding and so) I recomend for SSTC something that get less than 500Khz of Fres, that easier to get it to working, anything higher, more accurated needs to be the driver (more fast, more robust, that can handle more current)

Thats what I needed to hear.

I have my new wire shipping to me, so I am gonna use 30awg and get 9~~ turns.

Good idea. It will be very much worth it. Where did you get your wire from?

yeah thats why i said it was too thick. I mean itll work but itll work much better with thinner wire. My first SSTC ran at 1MHz and I think it used 22 awg wire.
