Update 16.2.2009

This powersupply is now almost ready to be installed in the tank. Still need to replace High voltage wiring and build final rectifier.

Did some testing with 20kVA today. Average primary current was 30-32Amps per phase and when shorted peaked well over 40amps

continuous arc - can burn forever like that

1234836250 599 FT61486 20kva2
stretched arc

jacobs ladder anyone?

almost ran out of room height with jacobs ladder

EDIT: what would happen if i run this unballasted... next thing to find out.

Wee big arcs! cheesey
They're like with my dual resonant MOTs with 6 capacitors, with the difference that mine start smoking in 30 seconds tongue

I will find out how long arc will be when all 12 start smoking cheesey

Just got some heavy cable and 250amp 3~ switch

EDIT: 20kVA arcs were extremely bright so i had to heavily under exposure those shots to get arc visble. In reality room is not dark at all and arcs are so birght that you cant really see them.

EDIT2: remember kids, running mot stacks with resonant capacitor is cheating tongue

Awesome arcs, Kizmo! I can't wait to see the TC powered by this stack.

Still havnt got that stupid transofmer oil i have been waiting for... mad

Almost everything is now done. I took some videos about this thing in action @ 20kVA (~30amp primary current). It can run like forever with this setting, im just slighly over mot ratings.

Link2 some normal arcing

Link2 burning wood

When i get that oil i will try this stack unballasted from 3x125amp line. I should draw at least 100amps per phase

WOW, this is a beautiful arc....

have estimates of what the size of the arc into the air, your coil will produce?

The drawn arc is almost the length of a TC arc tongue

100 amps per phase at 230VAC is 69kVA. What size of TC are you planning to run from this supply!?!?!? suprised suprised suprised suprised suprised

This +100amp testi is just for fun. In TC use not much over 20kVA will be used (at least for now...)

Update 5.4.2009

Suicide run (which ended up being suicidal)

- Unballasted, deshunted mots (12x)
- Powered directly from electric panel 3x250amp main fuses -> 3 x 125amp fuses -> 2x63amp 3ph automatic breakers
- New 15kV 6A rectifier under tranny oil (made from 90x 1kV 6A diodes)
- Primary current under load 125-126amps for each phase
- Secondary open circuit voltage 10.7kV and short circuit current 8.5-10A

Got almost perfect current sharing with this layout

1238950560 599 FT61486 Setup
1238950560 599 FT61486 Setup2
Whole setup. Rectifier is in green can under transformer oil to keep it cool.

1238950560 599 FT61486 Arc1
1238950560 599 FT61486 Arc2
1238950560 599 FT61486 Arc3
And some arcs. I will make HD video soon

Link2 Low quality video

Friend of mine was operating main swithc and wathing if anything goes wrong... and it did. I had first accidental MOT failure in my life. One mot decided to turn into plasma ball and fried 2 other mots. So 3 dead ones and lots of smoke. Stack is dead but this project is still alive and kicking.

Arcs were pretty good for being non resonant MOT stack cheesey
