Well, that's what it essentially is. It's pretty weird I haven't seen it described like this anywhere.

The secondary L and C form a parallel (not series) resonant network, which by itself can not provide any resonant rise. Where this "resonant rise" happens is between the pri-to-sec coupling and the secondary. Moving the primary closer to the secondary, or spreading the turns, allows for more effective power transfer to the secondary because of higher coupling.

EDIT: I would also like to say that according to this model, the output voltage of a TC can not be higher than the turns ratio times primary voltage...

Sorry if this seemed obvious for you, I just find it difficult to imagine something like this (scroll down to the plots) happens in a Tesla coil.
Or maybe I am completely wrong.

This also means that the SSTC bridge switches the highest current at resonance, so (sensibly) detuning the frequency cannot cause any harm to the switches.

Heh, unfortunately we tune to the Series Resonant frequency!

There are 2 very distinct frequencies with the secondary and whoever came up with that model is probably ignoring the high frequency model and showing the low frequency model.

If you take any secondary you like and sweep it as a quarter wave antenna you get the high frequency response along with its open circuit resonance, that becomes the high frequency model. An example would be open circuit at about 250KHz

BUT! if you take the same coil and attach that open circuit to ground you get a vastly different result, you get a parallel resonant system! You quickly find that the low frequency model is now at 50KHz!!!

So what he's saying is that when the arc Ground Loads, the system couples to its low frequency model, and I'm investigating that too. There's a whole lot of losses in there being left out, and of course... a streamer is a conductive path which has inductance, but that seems to be forgotten by a lot of folks.

It's an interesting problem and for me the question is, can I alter the low frequency characteristics to what I want? and is the impedance of the streamer the same as the low frequency model? I think these are some interesting things that I want to spend some time on, and hopefully once I get some RF drive power.

Antonio Carlos M. de Queiroz from Brazil already has done all these types of models way back when.

I can't find the main index page, but you can probably find it if you look hard enough in his tesla directory.

Good stuff.
