Hi, I'm new on the tesla coil scene, i've been researching for a bout a year and a half now. I have a NST rated at 15kv @ 60ma, so its roughly 900watt supply. I wanted help matching the supply to secondary coil dimensions, wire gauge, height, diameter. I've looked at deep fried neon. But i am unhappy if my coil is 6inch across and only 24inch tall. Also i was going to use 28awg wire is this too thin of i want to up the height of my coil to say 26-30inch? I've estimated if my coil is 30inch and I use 28awg wire there is 2373 turns on secondary!! Is that too many turns?

Thanks for any help regarding my issue,
-Corey

You should use 22-24awg

The secondary dimensions are more dependent on your desired resonant frequency, you want a secondary that will be able to provide a res freq within your primary's range.

Also, think about asthetics, take plenty of time to think about what you want... what sort of dimensions were you thinking of?

I was thinking 6inch diameter, 30 height. With no calculations made yet.

That's a fat secondary,

have you put any thought into available materials? You might want to check where you can get 6in dia. form before you get your hopes set on that.

as an example, my secondary has 24awg for 20in on a 4in form.

If you are worried about your coil looking small, dont. The main size of the coil will come from the construction of you base.

I would estimate about 4.5-5in for you form and a winding of about 24-28in, put a nice topload on there and it will look great

If i can find a 6" coil form, i am definitely going to use it. I calculated if i use 2000' of 24awg wire, i will get a little over 24 inches on a 6" form. I don't know i seem to have a obese coil fetish. =D I may use it for a sstc later so its better that its fat.

If I might inquire, being new as you are, where are you going to get 2000' of wire?

Aspect ratios of secondaries for SGTC are usually about 5:1 for best performance, although this can vary quite widely.

Visit my webpage at Link2 and go to AMATEUR RESOURCE and download my PDF on how i design my Tesla coils. This will
give you some insight in how my secondaries are designed etc...

I would go for 24AWG and aspect ratios No greater then 5:1, 4:1 gives you better inductance/unit volume.
I played with 6:1 just to see what the result would be and its performance was pretty poor, not enough inductance at the base where it couples to the primary.

Ok i bought 2400ft of 24awg wire should be here in a few days. Now i still have to find a 6" form anyone have any ideas where i can get such a mammoth tube? The 2400ft of wire will wind ~1500 turns, and be roughly 30in of coil on the 6" form, any objections to this design?
