Electric fence insulators are cheap and plentiful, come in all sorts of different shapes, and can sometimes be adapted as a low cost stand-off solution.
An alternative is to tap the ends of nylon or PTFE rod which is readily available in a wide range of lengths and diameters. Horizontal slots can be machined into it if desired to increase the surface leakage path.
Plastic 'dogbone' antenna insulators can also be adapted, or used as mold to reproduce the ribbing in a resin cast.
Now that the cheap, plentiful ceramic stand-offs of my younger days are no more, a creative approach to adapting everyday objects can often save the day. Go to a discount china shop and look at the shapes and sizes of all the ceramic bits and pieces they have in there. No one will guess where they started life if you have the ingenuity to adapt them!

AND you should be aware of Surplus Sales of Nebraska. I think the website is but I could be wrong, I have it bookmarked and purchase quite a few insulators from them.
There are quite a few vendors of insulators, it just takes a while to find them.

Yes, I too have some experience with Surplus Sales. They are a good operation. The only downer about them is that they know what they have, and price it accordingly. Most of the time, when I feel inclined to buy from them, it's a sign that I'm not patient enough and need to spend more time surfing eBay Or else that I need to hold off until one of the local hamfests comes along.
