Hi all.
Had a few problems with the UV etcher, they are a LOT more complicated than I thought.
I did however run into a more useful modification. I have some Press & Peel PCB "film" here which is basically just iron-on film you put in a laser printer. The plan here is to sandwich it onto the PCB using a sheet of glass, then use a laser beam (in this case a red 100+mW laser diode suitably focussed) to locally heat the film and cause it to transfer directly to the PCB.
No nasty chemicals apart from the etchant itself and if you use the electrolytic method its even less.
Its a positive etch process so could easily be done with minimal computer editing.

I don't understand why it would need to be localized heating. Since it is the type of film that you can just print on, can you just print on it and then transfer the image to the board with even heating?

Last I read about that stuff, you had to pass the film through a laser printer, then *iron* it onto your copper clad. The plastic/film bilayer acts like an easier to remove photo paper.
Hence, without the toner itself present to stabilize/bind to the copper, all the plastic would peel away anyways.
