Ya, an angle grinder is a lot quicker, I don't have one though :( Drilling through the MOT core would be a nightmare, but it usually has some holes in it already. On most MOTs I've seen, the I has two holes through it, and the E is welded to a mounting plate with four holes in it.
I threaded my all-thread through the holes in the I part, then bent it through 90 degrees and stuck the ends through the holes in the mounting plate.

I used a sawzall to cut through the secondary. The copper is soft enough that a coarse blade meant for wood tears through it even faster than the fine blade for metal. Keep in mind you have to be really careful not to damage the primary, though. It would probably be easier to grind the welds off, but with the sawzall method you don't need to re-weld or clamp the core.

My spotwelder was made from a 6V 90A transformer (not a MOT) which peaks at 812A on short circuit. See here The secondary is rectangular wire something like 2x12mm. I use tungsten electrodes.
Pic shows welding of steel and a big shower of sparkles. Lots of interesting detail when enlarged.
I am about to receive 3 caps of 650.000 uF 6.3V that should do as a capacitative welder in place of this. Similar to small commercial spotwelders.
