@rp181
Thanks I'll check it out.

I have no clue, lol. They have a bunch of stuff they don't need but have anyways. The city the school is located in has high taxes, I think that's why.

@big5824
That's exactly it. The coils will become smaller and smaller but the first one needs to not use to much power getting things started.

Sorry I am consulting out of town and won't be able to get new scope plots this week.

How do you feel about using a solenoid injector to get around the efficiency lost on the first stage?

What is a solenoid injector? I looked it up on google and the information was vague.

You could use a push type solenoid to initiate movement. This would be a far more efficient way to get the projectile moving. I don't consider it cheating because we are basically building a large unconventional solenoid anyways. It also allows you to use optical triggering for every stage.

Its like a railgun injector, just have a spring loaded solenoid to shove it in motion.

Just to make sure I am clear, I am talking about a push type electromechanical solenoid like: Link2

This company can custom wire solenoids to spec for cheap. You could do something like a 5% duty cycle 300v solenoid

I looked at their website and I couldn't find anything on custom solenoids. I was also interested in seeing if anyone had had any experience ordering custom coils from them. I saw the premade ones but they said they wanted $86 for one!! If that's the case I should get into the coil winding business.

An injection solenoid would work but I was considering using a pneumatic loading system for my final, polished design.

Solenoid would be much better, it avoids having to set up another system. That website is great for magnet wire too, it has AWG 56 to AWG 6.

These place is where I got my magnet wire. A lot cheaper than most places.

If you click on a specific solenoid and then click the "more information" button it will go to a chart of common gauge/turn# pairs for different applications(voltage + duty cycle). You will have to contact them to purchase any combination not available from their quick radio button menu, I would not trust selecting a different setup and leaving the actual desired parameters in the "Special Comments" box.
