I were demonstrating my VTTC and MOC bank on the 23th December at my work and one of the questions about the MOC bank was the short circuit current as we work with short circuit currents in the supplies and control panels we make at my work, so the amount of energy in joule it contains was not relate able to the daily work.

I am aware that people have said to not even bother calculating this with MOCs etc, but want to give it a try using information found around in our community.

Steve ward measured/calculated a MOCs ESL to 180nH

Terry fritz wrote a reply on the pupman list about ESR/ESL Link2

My MOC bank is charged with 6000VDC on the 18,5uF.
Resistance in the leads and paralling is about 5 ohms, stray inductance... no idea.

XL = squareroot(L/C)
squareroot(0,000000180/0,0000185) = 0,09864 ohm

6000vdc / 5,09864 = 1177A

Does this sound reasonable for a 333j bank of MOCs? Did I forget something important, or are these results just too far from the real world as its guessed numbers and perfect/no-loss calculations to used for anything?

It doesn't sound unrealistic, but you should measure the actual current as the stray inductance in the leads will probably be over 100nH, which will at least double the inductance you've counted on. If you have/borrow a storage scope you can capture the waveform with a Rogowski coil.

Thats my problem, I only got a old analoge scope, so if I had a DSO I would measure it :)

This was merely to get an idea of the powers I were experimenting with, but I guess its just too vague to calculate
