I just discovered another interesting issue with my converter. If I place any steel object within a few inches of the primary, it starts heating up like crazy! I dont get it, I thought a majority of magnetic field is supposed to be distributed in the core, not outside. Is anything I can do to avoid this? Thanks for everybodies input!

I think that the field does go outside the core (unless it's a toroid, then it shouldn't). The eddy currents heat the plate up if the magnetic field does go outside the core. The field's strength should decrease by the square of the distance so a plate placed twice as far from the primary should heat up 1/4 the amount it did before. I don't know how you would go about shielding it though. I hope that the information I gave helped answer part of your question. I don't know much (still learning mostly from reading threads here).

I always wondered where the "leakage inductance" closes its magnetic path. Now I guess we both know Just for a sanity check, running the transformer unloaded should decrease the heating noticably.

You talk really big, but it is very simple reaction. When you cousing something big (arm, leg, some metal) resonant fequency is changing. Its really important witch SSTC and DRSSTC, witch no antenna feed-back. IT may kill TC.
