Hi all,
I've now finished my latest SSTC, and after about a day of tweaking and one full mosfet replacement (there was a very fine loose piece of copper wire strand bridging the gap between two tracks on the pcb, connecting mains to where it shouldnt be!) i am partially satisfied with the results. Now i have some more questions.

The coil will run fine with out any sort of topload at all. With 16 turns on the primary it draws 1.5 amp, with 12 turns 1.7 amps and with 8 it draws 3.5 amps. with ANY sort of toplaoad at all beyond a bolt sticking up from the top of the secondary, the current draw drops to about 1 amp and i get very poor performance. This is really an issue, as it badly needs atleast a small corona ring around the top turn, due to breakout from the top turn. But any sort of corona ring/toroid, regardless of how small results in the above effect. Why is this happening?
The coil is CT feedback with a startup oscillator running at about 300khz (the coil with out a topload resonates at about 300khz), what sort of frequency should the startup osillator be running at?

Thank you everyone that has helped me so far, it is very appreciated. i will have some pics/vids of the coil abit later tonight (australian time).
Cheers,
Jesse

The topload can have a signifigant effect on secondary resonant frequency, basically lowering it.
You may need to reduce primary turns or retune your oscillator as you add topload capacitance to maintain power coupling into the secondary.

here is a short you tube clip:

i had to keep it short as the top turn arcing is burning up

dylan: yes i understand that the topload will change the resonant frequency, but the driver operates by feedback from the secondary and has no oscilator of its own except the startup oscilator.
