pfft.. you saying made me go look it up, and naturally i found synthesis procedure's (guess where!). The thing about TCAP is its simplicity and availabilty of items.

I would like to try using aluminium powder with some KNO3 and sulphur mixed in for added power. Would this be a good idea?

Nitrocellulose, while a better all-around propellant than TCAP, is much more finicky to work with because of its burn rate curves, at least in a hobbyist design with nothing being extremely precise. The point was that HEs can propel something with MUCH greater acceleration than almost any deflagration reaction can. What Camel is describing is a slow form of flash powder. Using rather powerful, fast flash powder, I achieved accelerations, for a given projectile : fuel ratio, of a little under 10% of those achieved by TCAP in simillar tests. TCAP, while not the final propellant choice, was actually ideal for initial testing for the exact reason that it IS very unstable (easy to detonate fully in sub-gram quantities, unlike nitroesters or nitroamines that would be more "practical" in a larger version), has a relatively low maximum detonation pressure in comparison to "proper" explosives ( 0.5M psi, which makes building a test chamber all the more simple), and is easy, fast, and cheap to synthesize. While oxy/hydrogen has a high detonation velocity, its energy density is VERY low in comparison to solid explosives. Only at starting pressures in excess of 200 bar can it become a viable gun propellant.

Now, on to something quite a bit less likely to have me banned, I've finished the MOT based charging system, which is currently two MOTs, ballasted with a single 300W incandescent lightbulb, with their secondaries in series, and two MO HV diodes in series to half wave rectify the output. It charges a very old 1.2kV, 150J bank of electrolytic camera capacitors fully in about six seconds, and could, hopefully, be used to charge pulse caps up to 5kV. I've constructed a small, simple test ETG, and the camera cap bank can launch an airsoft pellet out the barrel (with hardly any force at all, but that's to be expected with the efficiency levels you get with such low power). Now I just need to come up with some switching, possibly some big diodes for ringing protection (although they may be unneccesary in this case, as the electrolytics aren't fully discharged on a shot), and a new chrony.
