Camel thanks for the link it will be very usefull. However I beleive it is very optimistic in its calculations, I put in the details for the first two stages of my coilgun and it gave an extremly high muzzle energy of 5j for only a two stage 180j coilgun, imagine the full ten to twenty stages if that was true!

I'll concede that software does give some interesting results . . . apparently my single stage coilgun could achieve 15% efficiency if I added another 75 layers to my coil. But 5j seems entirely possible.

Try my oversimplified model simulator. probably it will not give you results precise to the 0.01% but it is easy to play with, and easy to change parameters.

As said before, it is not very accurate, also the default saturation magnetization is a bit too high (a conservative value is 1.6-1.8T)
