Update! I tried a couple toploads. Anything that is smooth prevents breakouts, but with a 9" breakout point from a semi-toroid made from the bottoms of two popcans (which fits perfectly on the secondary), I can get 9mm dual flames on the tip of the breakout point. Current draw is increased to 1.11A @ 23V. 2mm gain for 3W is pretty good, I think. amazed

Update update: Turns out, the real issue was getting the breakout point away from the coil. Without the topload, but with the remote breakout point, I can get the same 9mm dual flames, but with the 1A draw.

New problem. The oscillations start around 5V, drawing 450mA or so and go right up to 25V drawing 1.4A. However, once I pass that point, the oscillations stop, and the circuit starts drawing about 2.5A and heating the transistor.
