I am currently making a highish speed arsg. Well, i made it, with a vacuum cleaner motor(don't worry, im not that stupid, only 12 volts in) and a disk from a chopping board, cut with a hole saw(not sure what size, about 3 inches). It had only 2 electrodes, i will change the electrodes when/if i need. Well, i ran it for awhile with a face shield on with ac. Then i changed to dc fullwave rectified and it ran fine. I then filtered it and it ran for awhile and then the disk broke. It was loud.... Luckily i was wearing a face shield, and i was behind the rsg so i didn't get hit in the family jewels or anything like that. When it broke, it just happened to hit the small circuit board on the top of my transformer, and knock the 120 volt in off!!! So the transformer shut down of course, and after about a minute of staring at the transformer, i found the rotating electrode.
Well, i am basically looking for a cheap, strong(!!!), readily available rsg disk. I believe it was because the chopping board was so thin, so i might just buy a thicker chopping board. Just tell me what you think.

why not just use the Terry Blake Propeller style?
Well, i want to use this vacuum cleaner motor :P I do not trust the propeller type with a motor of this rpm. Also, i don't have the tools or plastic for the 'hub'. I have everything for a disk type, cept for the disk . I am going to have to look for something, the only suitable chopping board i found at wal-mart cost 12 bucks, not gonna pay that much(I am very frugal, and i have no money :P). I'll find something, but i want to know something about something first .

Well the propeller type should be alot safer due to the lower amount of kinetic energy stored in the rotating part.

Dago, its true, but before we launch into another debate, let me just link everyone to terry's page where he calculated the kinetic energy of an electrode that slips loose:
