Arcing from secondary to strike rail

How many coats of varnish should there be on the secondary coil to prevent this? Im using a 450W transformer so you know how much power Im using. Thanks!

I used three coats. Do you have a toroid on top. If I am correct, the toroid sets up a field that helps prevent arcing.

Those are racing arcs. Usually to much coupling causes that or to little varnish. How many coats of varnish is on the coil and how long is it between the uppermost primary turn and the lowest secondary turn? Also how far apart is the primary spaced from the secondary. Those measurements can determine the coupling but generally you want it around 0.13

You need to change coupling then. Coupling will fix it all. Just raise or lower the secondary to get the primary to be at the right level. Just a small change will change alot. Just use something quite thin and raise or lower until you get best performance.

It is in my experience that coatings will not stop these sparks, but will help protect your coil when they do occur. I really like using layers of epoxy coating (envirotex, ultra-glow, or even your typical 5 minute epoxy for little coils) that are so thick that the spark current tends to spread out over the surface and dissipate any localized heating that would cause the coating to fail. Thin varnish coatings seem to punch right through damaging the winding. But coatings are not the cure for the problem! As mentioned before, raise your secondary up some...

Other good fixes include making your primary have less sharp points. You can do this by placing a sheet of thick plastic (1/4" works well) over the primary. The plastic, having a higher dielectric constant, serves to spread out the e-field around the primary so that the primary looks more like a smooth flat surface, and this tends to keep corona from forming. This has worked wonders in many cases, but ive also seen this fail when condensation built up on the plastic.
