with regulator at max voltage 6.2v! at minimum 32v, and about halfway 20v. Is there any way to get the extra 6v? Also does silicone grease conduct heat? because my dad gave me some to use on the transistors and while they heat allot the heatsink doesnt heat much, if at all.

Silicone grease is fine - a thin, even layer smeared on between finger and thumb is best - don't spread it too thick, or this will defeat your purpose.
If you parallel up some more pass transistors the voltage drop across each will be less, (and so will the thermal stress).
In a real life circuit of this kind, you might get 28 - 29V regulated out of 32V unregulated, when all your losses are taken into account.

I must have been really tired when I posted that (midnight) because I was measuring between the wrong legs of the transistor, the real volt drop is a steady .6v. So I replaced my 240ohm resistor with a 180ohm one and added a capacitor across the variable resistor (says to do this in the application notes) now I have a voltage range of .9v to 30.1v. Also running my same load from yesterday (90v 5amp tradmil motor) it doesnt heat up at all now. I still need a bigger load to test it with though (my resistors are way too small).
