I took out the flyback from one of my globes, and every pin reads 7.5k ohms in relation to any other pin. I measured it while it was on the board and after I desoldered it.

...?

Hi Keantoken,

If you could take a photo of the flyback that you took out and put up on here, we could then suggest a driver for you to use.

Thanks... =)

I don't think anyone minds me bumping this ancient thread. :)

I found more information on linseed oil. According to this place, it has a dielectric constant of 3.4. So it has higher puncture voltage than mineral oil, as well as higher dielectric constant, if I am to believe my sources.

In any case, I have boiled linseed oil at the ready. Here is some information:

If the commercial stuff isn't good enough, maybe I can boil my own linseed oil.

I haven't gotten around to getting pictures of that flyback, but I was able to light up two small green neon lamps with my signal generator connected to it, when tuned to the resonant frequency. Signal generator gives 15V max output, with 50 ohm series resistance.

Just a note for you, I blew out my signal generator when I was first dabbling with flybacks. You need a proper means of isolating the flyback driver from the signal generator or you might find yourself buying a new one.

Would a simple isolation transformer work?

Thanks for the heads up,

Do not use Linseed oil. It is EXTREMELY flammable.

Use vegetable oil or mineral oil.

Caster oil is also a good oil, but with a dielectric constant about twice that of vegetable oil.

I don't understand how it is EXTREMELY flammable. My understanding is that it's only flammable while it's drying and that if you put it too close to a lamp or let it sit in the sun and get hot, it can combust. Tesla didn't seem to have any problems. In the link I provided, the flammability hazard is 1 as opposed to 4.

The special hazard of "drying" oils like linseed, known for a couple hundred years,
is spontaneous combustion of rags used to apply it, then left overnight in a pile.
I know a fireman who burned down his garage that way, and my brother had a smoky close call.
