What is the best way to get a spark gap coil to play music?

My idea is to place a bank of 2n3055's on the primary side of the neon sign transformer and feed it with an audio signal.

What are the limations of musical tesla coils?

It wont work, the modulation needs to be at frequency or amplitude modulation at the tesla coil fres, not from transformer. Changing the voltage from the transformer only will cause some nasty things with the spark gap, like it wont fire for the set tap.
I never see any SGTC's with audio modulation, I think there isnt a good way to do it, and the sstc's works very fine.

I hope I can help

Actually, it can work. In fact, Tesla himself was the first to audio modulate a Tesla coil about 100 years ago and also has a patent on it.

However, that said, the only modulation you'll get out of it is pulse modulation of the system itself. Basically, the modulation must be done at the spark gap or rather in place of it. Not sure of the specifics of how Tesla did it, but the best way is
to get a high voltage switch and modulate the switch, similar to how DRSSTCs are audio modulated. However, easier said than done.

Your best shot is the following:

1. PlasmaSonic - PWM modulation of a solid state coil - near perfect audio modulation and audio reproduction

2. Xenosonic - PRF modulation for DRSSTC type solid state coils

Details and schematics are available for both at:

So, hypothetically, if one was to mount a spark gap electrode to a voice coil servo, like a large speaker and PWM the servo..... Would modulating the spark gap voltage breakdown as such really create decent tones? I'm curious, but not ambitious to attempt it myself.

Ever heared of motor drivers? Those babes can deliver quite a punch and have an MC core, so you can fire up a sequence of accelerations/decelerations through them and, probably via some mods, probably by means of a separate MC, cause the system to switch the power supply on and off when needed... theoretically :)

I think a triggered spark gap is the way to go (if you must do spark gaps) along with DC reso-charging. Your max BPS is limited by the DC supply then, but this is true of solid state coils too.

Yes, use a dc tesla coil, and a capacitor that is small enough to fire perhaps 20khz, give or take. Reason is, you must have the spark gap firing and the correct frequency to sound correct, and audio can be as high as 20khz.
