hi guys
my first post to this list i thought i would hold out for a while till i had some photos to show you of my new magnifier, it has a 26"primary made with almost 8 turns of 10mm tubing with 10mm spaces, the secondary is 18"x18" wound with 180 turns of 3mm insulated cable topped with a 3x24"toroid, my extra coil is10"x30" and wound with 500 turns of 1.5mm enamelled copper wire and has a bare frequency of 309khz, i have a bottom toroid on it that is 6"x22" and for a top load i have again a 6"x22" toroid a 10"spacer and at the moment a 12"x36" toroid i am thinking about making the toroid a little larger say 72" all toroids are made from pie dishes and aluminum ducting
i havent fired it yet i have a few things to make a little more permanent but im pretty much ready to go , im expecting big things from this maggie just hope im not expecting too much !!
heres a link to a few photos
[link]
hope that works never done it on here before
later

Hi Earl,
Its looking great!
Is that the same magnifier that you took to the Derby Teslathon this year?
or a newly built one?

Looking forward to seeing its sparks
and if its anything like your last MOT tesla coil you have demo'd at 'thons
it will be awesome!

Mel

hi mel
yes its the same magnifier and no it isnt the same one :) the driver is the same but its a completely new resonator and toroids , ive still got a good twelve months left of work to do but i need to fire it before i make any more mods
and as for awsome .... it damn well better be !!:)

Nice work Earl. Looks like good work there.
Have you calculated the coupling you have for the primary?
I found the coupling a real problem with my magnifier, as it needed to be quite tight for the transfer to work properly.
Look forward to see your results!

hi there
no i havent calculated my coupling one of my main down falls is that im mathematically not useless but definatley flawed ...my primary is simply as close as i dare put it
i dont mind having something explained to me if your up for a challenge and i can promise you it would be a challenge

Earl -

Nice construction, I especially like the PVC primary supports.

A question on the toroids on your tertiary coil: have you used this material before? I can't be sure, but it looks like they may be made from what is called "dryer duct" material in the US. This is simply metallized plastic film wound over a coiled wire core. Generally this will not work, as the metallized plastic film usually doesn't make electrical contact with the spring, and there is no good way to electrically connect the top of the coil to the metallized side of the film.

An easy way to check if your toroid is made from metallized film is to expose a small area to direct flame from a match or lighter. If nothing happens, then it's aluminum foil material, which is what you want. If it instantly melts, then its metallized plastic film.

The primary-secondary coupling factor is very critical, and providing adequate insulation to prevent flashover is one of the most difficult aspects of designing an efficient magnifier. If you are building this magnifier without any knowledge of pri-sec coupling factor, then it will be pure luck if you are able to obtain good operating efficiency (input power:spark length). However, some people are lucky!

Regards,
Herr Zapp

hi there
my toroids are definately aluminum ive used this stuff before i did thet test anyway and its fine...yes the coupling ...ive studied many magnifiers and one of bill wysocks magnifiers has a flat primary ...im quite sure mine will be fine of course theres always a chance though !
