The peak current of mercury vapour devices cited in data sheets is put there as the basis for calculation of the series resistor, without which the device would appear as a dead short during conduction, offset by the constant voltage drop of the device, which is usually about 15V. Without this series limiting resistor, the rectifier would be destroyed.
So the peak current is not the maximum the device is able to draw left to do what it wants, but the absolute maximum which it should be permitted to draw within the integration period, where one is cited.
