Here's a video of my coil.

I have a couple of problems to solve, the spark gap is not consistently firing... and some bad flashover issues...

What do you think?

You've got some racing sparks there, you may want to reduce the coupling a bit, ie raise the secondary.
Can't see much with the lights off.

Would raising the coil a bit be reducing the coupling?

Check your comments on youtube :P. Oh, and what i didn't get to say there(message to long and i don't wanna write another) was what do you mean by the gap is firing non consistently? Seemed pretty good to me. Or where you not using a variac at first?

The gap will sometimes fire between one set of electrodes, and not the other, and sometimes it wont fire at all, even up to the highest setting on the variac, the coil will just buzz loudly...

Sometimes it just seems very erratic. I improved my spark gap design by making sure that the arbor was more secure, and took off an unessecary piece of lexan to improve the power transfer, but the gap remains erratic, like its a 50/50 chance that it will work when I turn on the primary power...

I will not have time to work on it until this weekend, as I got behind in class due to my desire to finish the coil, HV addiction sets in.

Hehe, oops!

Anyway, about the gap, when you do have a bit of time, take some pictures of your srsg, then we might be able to tell you. Btw, when it does work, it may not be synchronous, because some guy on youtube had to use a variac to bump the vltage up to 140 volts to get it to 'lock' into synchronous.

If I had to say what I felt it was doing, I would say that it feels like its locking into synchronous mode sometimes.... the behavior is so random... I'll get a picture posted of the spark gap tomorrow. Right now I have to finish my circuits hw... stupid s-domain circuits... my professor is terrible at teaching us, and this book takes all the easy problems for examples.

My life sucks... normally I am much happier than I probably seem right now :)

if anyone wants to help me with circuits HW I'll be around!
