So I just finished winding my secondary, and have found that I have maybe 10 - 15 turns out of ~ 1000 that aren't in a great position. They aren't really overlapping so much as they seem to have lost some tension and are poking up. What kind of problems could this lead to considering the relatively small amount of turns that are loose.

I would guess that a streamer might come off of the ones near the top and also the ones near the top might have corona coming off of them.

Lucky me then, they're all on 1/3 of an end of the coil, looks like I'll make that end the bottom.

Yep, orient that end closer to ground. On my last SSTC, I had several 0.15mm turns crossing over. Many of these promptly melted into shorted turns, carbonizing the secondary underneath. I was able to get all the sparks and photos I needed before it became too hectic, but it can be disappointing to see your secondary slowly burning up in front of you.

The trick when winding is to keep the temperature of the copper and the former as constant as you can. If you wind a secondary and then put it outside in the cold, you may wake up the next morning to find a few of your turns falling loose around the bottom! :P

This exact same thing happened to me... twice. The first time i really didn't know what i was doing. The windings began to come loose as i hadn't varnished it. I STUPIDLY covered the bottom in electrical tape o keep them from overlapping. Well, i was using it on my 720 watt sgtc for awhile and i was only getting about 1 foot of spark. Then i tried to run it on my 833c vttc and it would melt the secondary after like 5 seconds and i only got 10 inch sparks. After that i knew something was up with the secondary. Then i put my 811a vttc together and it did the same thing, small spark length and melting secondary. I took off the electrical tape and unwound a few 10's of turns and took out the bad part. On youtube you can see the 833c vttc with the secondary with shorts, and then the newest 811a vttc vid which is after taking the shorted turns out.

And i almost had my 6 inch by 25 inch secondary done, and then the hurricane(Ike) hit and i had to put the secondary out in the garage(i REALLY dont understand why) and alot of the windings overlapped and all of them are loose. Then i started to put the wire back on the 40 dollar spool of 24 gauge wire, and the i put it inside(i was told to). Now, numerous times the secondary has fallen because of careless people, and one day my mom stepped on the wire and broke the spool, and now the wire is tangled all up and it is not usable for a secondary.

When you start to wind a secondary make sure it is your top priority(i mean out of all your projects) and REALLY take your time to make it look nice and neat, and make sure you keep the temperature constant and hurry up and wind it, and then varnish to make sure that kinda thing doesn't happen. I know i sure will next time.

IF this one fails, which will be cool to watch but dissapointing to see, I have a jig ready to go on a lathe that I recently gained access too. Much easier than doing it by hand I imagine =)
