I dont know how the tvs diode connects. I am assuming it goes across the gate and emitter after the 5.1ohm gate resistor. Am i correct? I know it is a dumb question but please correct me if i am wrong.

Just to put it more clear - yes, the TVS diode should just bypass the gate itself. Assuming you use a bipolar drive (as unipolar is pretty dull) you need a bidirectional one, but for the speed purposes it seems it's more optimal to use a serial pair of unidirectional ones instead.
