Hi.. I am making SGTC, so i have few questions..

This is my secondary coil.. Wire 0.315 mm, on 10 cm diameter PVC pipe, height about 40 cm, ~ 1150 turns

----------

I have made flyback xfmr driver from this site :

this is how it looks by me..:
T200900 IMG7018

i had in mind for using it as PSU for SGTC.. Will it do the trick??

do i need to use diodes/bridge rectifier before spark gap since caps are "electrolytic type"?

Duty cycle is something like 30% of time ON and the frequency is (if my frequency meter is not lying) is 7.2kHz

I can get from flyback spark about 10-12 mm long, that would give something like 20kV on output

--------------------------
I have made 4 leyden jar-capacitors (beer bottles, honey jars, salt and water and aluminium foil), with overall capacity of 3.2 nF..

T200942 IMG7017

I have set up all in their places, but spark jumps across gap only when i set gap distance less than 2 mm...

What is the trick? Maybe weak PSU for flyback driver so it cant give enough current?

Any ideas, suggestions, feel free to say..

Thx a lot and sorry for bad english!

Dont use that flyback driver, for your coil, the less driver that you can use for a good result is a ZVS Driver:

With 555 driver a SGTC of that size wont make anything on out.

if you want a reference, I used a ZVS on one of my coil and worked very well .. tongue

The video itself is the driver, but also shows how it is behaving in a SGTC .. shades

Here is the video:

I think that driver could work, but alexandre and Mestre Racerxdl are correct that there are more powerful ones. What you may want to try is increasing the frequency to ~15-20kHz for a TV flyback, or ~30-40kHz if it is from a computer monitor. And try to have a 50% duty cycle. Once these are done you should be able to get a good amount more power with a proper PSU.

Even if you do get more power output however, a secondary that size is going to need much more power than your flyback can give. You may get some streamers or corona, but it won't be much. Small NST maybe?

Also, you do not need any diodes before your capacitor, but the reason your gap will only fire at 2mm is because the homemade type capacitors are very lossy and it is leaking away charge faster than your flyback can supply it. I highly recommend getting some commercial film/foil or doorknob capacitors as these will work much better.
