I am begining desinging my seconed Tesla Coil.
Actully, it will be the same as my first coil, just better built.
My NST is 15 KV. I'd like my cap to be aroung 8 nf
My curent desing is a stacked capacitor. Each plate is 12" by 27" Dialectric being four sheats of 6 mill polyethaline. I'm hoping to compress it and emerse it in oil.
are these dimensions and stuff right?
Few minor questions (I NEVER run out of questions): Theoreticly, my NST should give off thirty inch sparks, what keeps it from doing so?
I have seen TC's with adjustible spark gaps, and non-adjustable primaries. In these is the coil tuned throgh the spark gap instead of the primary?
Also I have seen coils that have no ground for the secondary coil. What do these coils do with the ground for the secondary?

Well there could be all kind of losses. Mainly the spark gap but could be, too small wires in tank circuit, less than ideal dimensions for pretty much any component of the coil, coupling from primary to secondary... could go on and on.

The spark gap absolutely needs to be adjustable. So does the primary unless you have a nice adjustable cap which I have never seen at the ratings you would need but they might be out there. Tuning using the spark gap is not a good idea unless you want to burn up your transformer, only minor tweaking of the spark gap should be necesarry once the tank is tuned to the secondary.

can't say I've ever seen a coil without a secondary ground of some kind. Correct me if I'm wrong guys but if you don't ground the secondary the coil will never work.

Have no idea but you could easily verify your math

Thank you for that
I did use a Capacitor Calculator for that, it just seem that all the TC capacitors I'v seen are smaller.
Anouther question... It is okay to have a little bit of metal in the Primary coils construction? I'm thinking of usint Co-axial cable staples to build the Primary coil. (little plastic loops that the cable goes throw, with a very small nail to hold it to the wood)

That would probably work but when your in this stage of building why take that risk? If I were you I would drill holes in the wood and use cable ties to secure but you might be okay. I don't know exactly what your talking about can you let us see a picture or drawing?

Didn't think of cable ties. I take it I drill two holes per connection.
I will do that, thanks.
I have a large sheet of polyethaline plastic, is thier a way to tell if it is 4 mill or 6 mill? I know it is one of the two.
How many layers of 6 mill should I use? MY nst is 15 KV.
I was thinking four layers of 6 mill. To test it, I built a rig, has a metal plate, and above it is a nail. One connected to each side of my NST. I put four layers of poly between (I don't know if 4 mill or 6) and turned on the NST.
It created sparks that passed throgh the poly, between the nail and plate. WIthout actully damaging the poly.
Does this constitute a voltage breakdown? Would the four layers of poly be acceptable in the capacitor? Becouse the nail point increased voltage (right terminology?)
