In most cases your looking @ $12us-$120us just for the bridge, namely the igbts. Then ad the cost of the rest of parts I'd say its easily a $120-$300us coil. Just my guess. I could be wrong.

If its your first ever major project, I'd seriously recommend going with a SSTC: - Capacitors are usually small(ish) in size and are typically single components where in DRSSTCs there are multi-mini-capacitor (MMC) banks which can end up costing *alot* of money. - Easier to build, lower powers, simpler design - MOSFETs are more common for SSTCs (whereas IGBT's are used more in DRSSTCs) - MOSFETs are cheaper than IGBT's
It also depends on what equipment and tools you have, if you don't have an oscilloscope it might be a bit of a miracle to get anything to work for a DRSSTC without one, but it wouldn't be so impossible to make a SSTC that runs off of feedback from an antenna.

I think that with SSTC you get the most spark for your buck. To get a SGTC working decently you need expensive high voltage caps and a quality spark gap. However, SSTC can be made using very little money, in fact my first one used two $1 transistors, other parts were salvaged or sampled, and it made 20cm sparks (@ ). In fact you can build one for free if you sample parts.
