Unfortunately, these capacitors are NOT suitable for use in a Tesla coil tank circuit.

The dielectric is polyethylene terephthalate (Mylar), which is quite "lossy" at typical Tesla coil frequencies and will usually quickly overheat and fail.

However, you already bought them .... they may be better suited for use in a Marx generator or some other DC application.

Herr Zapp

I have tried these caps. They do not work well and they die quick.

They heat up and melt, burst into flames, explode, ect. They just stop working like they are supposed to.

The problem is that they are just totally unsuitable for use in a high frequency circuit. The dielectric quickly overheats internally, and submerging them in oil just can't conduct the heat away from deep inside the cap.

They are really only suitable for DC or audio-frequency applications.

I had a 6kv nst and i used 3 of those capacitors in series and a few strings in parallel(cannot remember how many) and they would last a few minutes with bad performance. I upgraded to another fake capacitor from ebay ( Link2 )
and i had much better performance but it failed in about 3-4 minutes.

I now use some REAL capacitors, .68uf 1600 volt from CDE and i get even better performance and they do not heat up at all and i have used them for a run time of maybe 5 minutes and they where the same temperature as before i started the run.

So basically do not get tesla coil capacitors off ebay unless they and CDE or another known brand.

Here is a list of known good caps for sgtc use Link2 I also have used the 942c16p33k .33uf 1600v caps and they work very well. basically any 942c series capacitors will work well.
