Hi all.
Just found this link on Hackaday.com

I've found that with some minor modifications a multi-turn (I used 20T 10k) pot can be installed along with a modified screwdriver shaft inside the servo. The board is removed and placed outside on mine but it is possible to install the whole thing including PCB if you are careful (though it does risk damaging the pot)
Used low melt alloy to hold the shaft with grooves cut into the old pot housing, and then aligned by hand until it was correctly centred.
Another variant is to print onto acetate a graduated greyscale, and then use a photodiode and LED unit to convert movement into "virtual pot position" which is fed back into the servo. This also makes the whole thing contact free so it should be more accurate.
Regards, -A
[Edit: The first picture was 1075 pixels wide, making the page very depressing for people with low resolution displays. That is why there is a rule that says 400 pixels is the maximum allowable. ]
