I don't know if better is the right word. I'm a calibration technician and I use/calibrate/repair all kinds of test equipment. I've only come across like 1 time when I ever, ever used all 4 channels at the same time. IMO 4 channel Oscope is not needed.

On the other hand, I have a 4 channel scope and find it useful. Here we see firing pulses, line voltage, and line current from a hard fired SCR driver I was working on, on 3 channels. Generally, two channels is a minimum, because it gives you the ability to compare two waveforms in time. Any more than two is just a bonus.

I agree with Steve, while 4 would be *useful*, starting out doing TC work you might be better off replicating someone's design and just having a 2 channel. But if you find a cheap 4 channel all the more power to you.

I thought I might put this out there, try searching craigslist for your first scope... I just got a dual trace one for free! the others I saw were pretty inexpensive and might be worth starting out with, before you really go all-in on equipment

Absolutely great tool, I've had mine for about 9 years, and I still use it often. I just made an attachment for it so that I could connect it to my drill press and use it as a router.
