Hi all. Just read about this, seems that te secret is to first test your strike anywhere matches etc with a UV light- if they glow then it will work, the more glow the better.
The recipe seems to be to place the match heads in a small beaker or phial, add a very small amount of bleach and then thoroughly mix. then leave the solution upright for 20 minutes. remove the top liquid portion ONLY and inject it into a tomato at 1cm gaps. then inject 3% hydrogen peroxide into the centre of the tomato.
Glow seems comparable to a glow stick, but I havent tried it yet due to a lack of the correct type of matches (damned eco-whining Health and Safety Mafia)
Anyone here tried this? I though BS but there are many, many examples on Metacafe and other sites.
Was also looking into extracting the H2O2 from a few expired (out of date) glow sticks where the inner vial is intact. regards, -A

I think strike anywhere matches have phosphorous in them, it could be that the peroxide is oxidizing the phosphorous, or causing it to change to the white allotrope....

Looks neat, but looks fake too. Ive spent hours looking for successful attempts on the net, and have found nothing. Lots of failed attempts, and angry people. Doesnt look hard to mess up, so my guess is it is fake. Could a chemistry guru here confirm this for us? Matt

Wish I knew that before I tried...Wasted an hour (when I should have been studying!) and 5bucks! Is there ANY truth to this fake though? How much "explosives" would we need to make it work? (Mythbusters). Matt

Update:- it doesen't work. Methinks somewhere along the line someone mixed in some glow stick juice into the matches (which will work)
That said, if you want to make tomatoes glow, the glow stick juice method does work, possibly even with a dead glow stick as the main limiting factor is the quantity of hydrogen peroxide in the ampoule, leaving some unreacted glowing compound.
