The aforementioned have contributed financially to the continuing triumph of 4hv.org. They are deserving of my most heartfelt thanks.
the following code denotes a void method but when the code says "return" what does it return? how does the return statement work when no return value is specified in front of it? how can it return anything when its a void method to start with?
public class Merge {
public static void sort(Comparable[] a) {
sort(a, 0, a.length);
}
// Sort a[lo, hi).
public static void sort(Comparable[] a, int lo, int hi) {
int N = hi - lo; // number of elements to sort
// 0- or 1-element file, so we're done
if (N <= 1) return;
// recursively sort left and right halves
int mid = lo + N/2;
sort(a, lo, mid);
sort(a, mid, hi);
// merge two sorted subarrays
Comparable[] aux = new Comparable[N];
int i = lo, j = mid;
for (int k = 0; k < N; k++) {
if (i == mid) aux[k] = a[j++];
else if (j == hi) aux[k] = a[i++];
else if (a[j].compareTo(a[i]) < 0) aux[k] = a[j++];
else aux[k] = a[i++];
}
// copy back
for (int k = 0; k < N; k++) {
a[lo + k] = aux[k];
}
}

Indeed, the array a is sorted in place. Remember that in C/C++, when you pass an array as an argument to a function, you're just passing a pointer to its first element, so a is the same array throughout, and when sort finally returns, it's been sorted.
For a more in-depth explanation of recursion, see recursion

He needs to use it to terminate the recursion. Every recursive function needs a way to make it finally stop. As in, Recursion: see recursion, until you get bored, then go for a coffee break.
Remember that return is a statement for program flow control, like break, continue or even goto If you don't give return an argument, it doesn't try to return anything, so it's OK to use it in a void function. But it still has the desired effect on the program flow.
