I wanted to make something i could use for running all my flybacks and stuff so i made a 555 oscillator circuit on a pc board and put it in an old pc psu box. I left the switch on the back there as well as the plug thing, and i wired that up to a transformer which is 12 volts at 1 amp. I rectified it and smoothed it. It runs a fan and the 555. Then it goes through an irfp460.

A secret to making the plasma globe light bulb work better is to bridge the contacts at the bottom of the light bulb so both electrodes are at the same voltage. This stops one of them from being a ground and lowering the power of the plasma in the globe.
I've also used a Mot to completely melt out the contacts and just leave the glass at the bottom. I wouldn't suggest this if you're keeping the globe, but with a high enough power driver, it makes some interesting effects, especially if one of the wires doesn't completely melt off and leaves a small bit there.
