I now plan on using the LT1510, which has an application note which allows constant current charging while the load is varying current requirements. This will allow the battery to charge while the device is running. Soon enough, I'll be working on a prototype! Thanks for all of the replies, haven't gotten on my computer for a while because the CCFL inverter went bad
