Going to re-oil my x-ray transformer..........

....and need some opinions. First thing, I don't have a vacuum pump. Even if I did, I don't thing the little rubber seal on the cover would hold vacuum very well, if at all. Here's what I was thinking of doing: Use a LPG heater to warm up the coil & core to about 125' F.
This should drive out any moisture in the coil. Put 5 gallons of new Shell Diala A into the can. Lower the transformer into the (room temperature) oil. Now comes the assume part: as the unit cools, the oil is drawn into the coils, not leaving any air.

Is this wishful thinking, or is there a chance this may actually work? I's hate like hell to burn this thing up on its first run. Oh, one more question: I'm guessing I need to fill this up to the bottom of the Federal sockets, correct? When I got it, the oil was just over the top of the core. The bottom of the federal plugs along with the filament transformers were not in oil.

Check the TCML archives for posts about re-oiling pole pigs. In fact, I'm pretty sure this topic came up here just a little while ago, and I searched for and referenced some TCML posts. Trouble is, I've had my night cap already and so I'm falling asleep at the wheel right now wink) (i.e., I'm just too damn lazy to look for my own post!) I recall reading about a heating/cooling technique like you suggest, except that I think the transformer was used to heat itself by first dropping in oil, then powering it (through a ballast, of course!) with the HV winding shorted. This is a convenient way to heat the transformer from the inside out and make sure the heat is in all the right places.

In Victorian times, induction coils were sometimes boiled in oil or wax to ensure their thorough impregnation.
