I used four 5A 400V rectifier diodes and an IRF740 from a CRT monitor, and they held up fine at low power levels, though sometimes they would start to get real hot. It worked up to about 200V at 1440uF and then started slowing down fast, as the power level was too low with those parts.

You mean like those? 400V 10A ones. Also, if you used heatsinks, it should live...

for your Fet driver, I would order (as a free sample,) Texas instruments part number TL2812. bear in mind that your driver/oscillator section of the circuit needs to have a power supply of 10-12 volts for it to work properly, and make sure you have both inductors and capacitors sustaining the power for the drivers and oscillator . Because Boost converters tend to send lots of noise into the line, if you decide to make this a 12v system, your chips should stay nice and cool (when I made one without power smoothing connections, i fried about 5 555's before I realised what was happening. as for the voltage divider, its not a special order part. all you need is a regular .1µf cap, a 2n3904, a 1Kohm resistor, a 1Mohm resistor, a 1717 ohm resistor (or equivalent), and thats about it. connect (from capacitor) the 1Mohm, to 1717ohm, to ground. then connect .1µf to ground, and to the connection between the 1717 ohm and the 1Mohm. connect the base of the 3904 to the capacitor. connect the 1Kohm to the oscillator + supply, and to the collector of the 3904. also connect pin 4 of the 555 to the collector, and ground the emitter. you should have a self regulating power supply now.
as for parts list, I would go with the mosfet and diode mentioned above. or rather, go with that. I myself use an IGBT and a specially ordered fast action diode (15 for $10) rated for 13A continuous and 1200piv. and thats about it.

Yes, except, their high Rds on means they dissipate alot of power unless youre running a highly resistive/reactive load. Use an IRFP450 or similar for better results.

use picoodle, dont need to make acc.

just get a bsic 555 astable circuit to work, and use a low value capacitor (i use 10nf) and just connect that to the IGBT. Use the schem on wikipedia and voila! Im using a 600v, 30A IGBT, and its drawing 5-6A, and still gets hot. You will want a fairly large heatsink.

Ill explore a bit for the record, imageshack needs no account :P
