I was thinking about my next project (HV CW Multiplier), and realized that I am going to need an accurate way of reading the input voltage of my transformer to make sure I get the voltage I want out of the multiplier without killing it. So for my question: Are there any dangers to using high value (20-100Mohm), 10kV resistors to make a 10 or 20 resistor chain and just probing the voltage across the final resistor with a normal DMM? Also, is there a better way to make a divider than a simple resistor chain?
One final thing; so as not to kill the diodes, is there also a good way of making an HV milliammeter, or will a normal voltage milliammeter work?

A lot of people will use the internal resistor in the voltmeter (usually about 20meg) as the lower half of the divider and use a high resistor (in the gigohm range) for the ther half. At least then you don't have to worry about the resistors flashing over since you have like 50 of them...
Also, normal ammeters work for HV, just be sure they are well insulated! Also, if you can put them in the low voltage side of your hv supply...

I can take the back off of my 500VAC/500VDC/200mA multimeter and use my .01ohm-20Meg ohm meter to measure the resistance of the meter's resistor. I've looked at it before, and it has the different resistors marked based on the input.

I would use many 50 megaohm+ resistors, so I don't think It will be a problem. My DMM's current chip is fried as far as I know, anyway, and I don't have any more cheap DMMs to blow up.
