I have bought 500g spools of enamelled copper wire in various metric and SWGs from Brocotts, a UK company that I would reccomend but for the likely shipping costs outside the European Union. Brocotts have an ebay store here:

You're right. Although the price of the wire seems very reasonable, shipping to my side of the pond would cost as much as the 1kg spool I would order.

I have two sources. This is a commercial outlet that has been very fair:

The other place I go is a small shop that fixes alternators for automobiles. They specialize in fixing alternators and generators for exotic cars and old-timers......THEY are really wonderful as they will sell off their large spools of "unique" size wire when they finish a job. I just walked in and explained what I wanted and they actually gave me some square 26 when I bought about what was left of a 20lb spool of 22 round double varnished. ( for 40$)

You wouldn't happen to have any wire from that alternator rewinding place that you would be willing to sell to me, would you, quicksilver? angry In all seriousness, I looked at bulkwire, and they seemed to be almost twice the price of parawire and magnet4less, though I don't know of anyone who uses magnet4less, which is really the supplier I was asking aobut.

In small amounts you do get screwed. Their front page is a real turn off. I MAY have some that I'm not going to use: it will depend on if I get a toroid - I will let you know as soon as I know (about a week).
Re: magnet4less, their selling of 7 lb spools for $100 is not such a great deal either.

Frankly I wouldn't buy wire unless I REALLY needed an exact spec. Locally in Tucson Ive seen 7lbs spools go for $58.99 retail at those sizes. Unfortunately the real breaks in prices come from having a business license and buying at the 20lb level and greater (my opinion). Just try getting a bit of spare time and walking into a alternator repair shop or a shop that repair electric motors and asking.....That's what I did: I'll bet you get lucky.

There is another issue that this whole discussion opens up and that's the theft of copper. If you see someone selling copper wire at a price that is so low it doesn't make sense... -it's a damn good bet it was stolen to sell. Unfortunately the deal would be too hard to resist. I'd almost bet that several folks on Ebay are selling stolen copper due to the level of copper theft almost everywhere. /soapbox off/

But if I don't do another coil, I will send you a PM and give you a really good deal - as I got it for free that way!

I've been getting it on eBay recently....BulkWire *used* to be decent in price, but now they're just scary.

I use this place Link2
There prices are pretty darn good and for me it is local so i don't have to pay shipping. They have a much larger stock then what is on ebay and here is their website if you want to give them a call. Link2

$50-80 for a 6-8lbs spool is industry standard. The above posted prices are reasonable. I think if you see some Ebay seller knocking off spools for half that price, it's likely to be stolen copper if the supply is substantial..

HOWEVER, the places that make or repair motors, alternators, generators - whatever... do occasionally have material left over on a very large spool that they will take whatever they could get for it as they can't use what's left for their purposes.

What makes you think that any of the copper wire on ebay is new? I would assume that is is all lefover stock/liquidated shops/etc like all of the other stuff that is on ebay...

if it were me I would just keep an eye out for a decent deal, I have got quite a bit of copper wire at well below 'normal' rates by just wating for an acceptable spool to come up that no one else wants.
