60-120kV from something like 5-20kV. I don't have the details down in stone yet, so I'm trying to figure out what the best capacitors to buy for my money are. Being in college doesn't leave much money for HV, but I am trying to keep going in the hobby in the spare time I do have.

I have another question following this thread. I can get 30kV 2nF Polystyrene caps 12 for 50 dollars, or 30kV 1nF ceramic caps for 20. Is there a problem using the ceramic caps in a CW multiplier running at about 10mA input at 20-100kHz? Or would the Polystyrene caps be better for the application?

Hello Firefox, I'm wondering, which capacitors did you decide to use in your CW multiplier?
I'm also contemplating building a CW multiplier, and I'm having some capacitor questions as well.
If you're talking about the relatively inexpensive capacitors sold by ff77hh on ebay...well I wonder how hot the ceramic caps would get if some meaningful power (say 1 to 2 kw), was put through the multiplier? (IIRC those cheap ceramic caps are relatively lossy).

Sorry for the late response, JP. I have put this project aside for now, for lack of space in my college apartment. I also got my hands on a 1.2kW microwave oven, so I am turning that into a high voltage CW multiplier, because I do not need to build a driver for it. I may, however, have a large set of HV doorknob capacitors coming, so keep your fingers crossed that I will pick up this project once again.

Well thanks for the update.
I think I'm going to go with the Chinese polystyrene HV caps on ebay. This is because first of all, compared to the smaller, relatively inexpensive "type 2" ceramic capacitors, they look physically big enough to be able to operate at rated voltage in air; and secondly, they would apparently have much lower loss (at least an order of magnitude less), which may be an important factor in a multiplier intended to have a high power throughput.
