Just looking at these wonderful MOT powered masterpieces just motivated me that much to ask something.
Ive been wanting to make something that gives off more than a 3cm spark so a tesla coil came to mind... last year. NSTs are totally out of the question as they are like gold-plated steak with silver peas. MOTs are free and I have 3-4 of them somewhere around.
But those nice calculators out there aren't designed for MOTs (or I haven't found one yet) So how the hell do I work out the tank capacitor and the primary winding? The secondary/topload doesn't really have to be worked out, right? I guessed the capacitance with a home made cap- that ended in molten metal and giggles.
Anyway, the way to work out the tank cap and primary inductances. Please!
Thanks ~Munkey

MOTs normally need ballasting, so you can work out the required tank cap from the VA rating of your ballast, the same way as those calculators work it out from the VA rating of a NST.
