seems I was 107 years out of date...
That said, I did wonder about using a resonant tank circuit made of superconducting wire to store small amounts of energy, would also somewhat get around the "high DC currents causing quenching" problem.
With the modern superconductors this might just work, and adding/removing energy from the system would not be as much of an issue.
