Its looking real good!!

So...what do you suspect being the problem?
the feedback phase?

looking forward to seeing the sparks!

All the best,
Mel

AND IT WORKS!!!!! After days of trouble shooting and many discussions with Steve Ward (thanks steve) i finally got first light. There are still a number of things that need to be fixed because it is running very "unhappy" right now. I don't know how but i managed to blow the 10 amp fuse on my variac with just 30v across the buss. The igbt's also get decently hot at a low input voltage but at least, it is a start.

Well done!!

What bus voltage did you turn it up to, in the video?
Also...you mentioned that there are still bugs in the coil,
what problems are you still getting?

I just noticed something about your coil you might want to consider changing. Your gdt's are located kinda far from your IGBT's and the secondary leads on them look too long to me. I have had problems with this in the past. I found it better to make the primaries of your GDT's the longer part and your secondaries shorter. You should put the cores right up on your bridge. Make both lengths as short as possible. It's bad to have either one two long but longer secondaries create more problems.

OK thanks. once i get it working well, i will mess around with gdt placement and such. Right now i think the problem is the diodes in parallell with the gate resistor are not working probably and not adding inough dead time and there is some cross conduction going on and that is why it is drawing so much current.

Hm, your GDT's should provide some dead time as well. Ive tried 1 ohm all the way to 10 ohms gate resistors with no problem. The diode resistor combo doesn't seem to really matter much when you're using GDT's. You should try scoping two IGBT's and see if its really cross conducting.

It works! Well this time, after making some changes i got it working very well. with 70% input voltage i got 24" and a little more tuning should get me even more. Here is a vid Link2

Nice one!! Next time you should point a torch up the secondary like Dr Spark does, this way we can see the coil as well as the sparks.
