My friend and I are planning to build a twin SSTC setup that would (hopefully) be audio modulated for our junior year science fair. The coils will most likely be identical. I want to use Richie Burnett's driver that he used on his SSTC.
mod edit: oversized images Here is the control circuit:
This is the full-bridge setup.
I wanted to run it off of full wave rectified 120V, 60Hz mains. I am planning to use IRFP450 Mosfets.
Would there be anything wrong with using these mosfets?
The secondary I wanted to make it 4 inch diameter and a 20 or 22 inch winding. I wanted to use 25 or 26 AWG Magnet wire to wind it, in attempt to reduce heating at the base due to high current. How many turns should I aim for? I was thinking about 1000 or 1100. Too many, too little? Should I just go for the 1250 that he recommends?
The primary. Here is what Mr. Burnett said about the primary.
A significant disadvantage of the primary feed method is that very tight coupling is required (k>0.35) in order to get good power transfer. This makes insulating the primary from the secondary somewhat challenging as the power level is increased.
I know what he means, but how does one measure the coupling? Also, he used a 18 turn primary, would that be appropriate for my coil? Should a make it so I can tap different turns?
Running a twin setup. I want to make two complete driver circuits. You might think this is stupid or a waste of money. The point of this is that my friend wants his to function by itself after science fair, and he's paying for all his parts. I'm not complaining yet. How would we go about making the outputs arc to each other? I don't see a reason that it wouldn't be possible?
Money isn't a big issue here, so any suggestions for improvement would be greatly appreciated.
One last question, its about the date drive transformers. Here is a quote from the page.
This isolation transformer has two secondary windings wound in opposite directions to drive the gates of each MOSFET.
Is there a tutorial or a page I can look at to teach me about toroidal transformers and the winding of them.
If anyone can answer any of my questions or offer any pointers, that would be greatly appreciated. As you can probably assume, this is my first full scale tesla coil, as well as my first solid state coil.
Once again, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I've used IRFP450s. They performed quite well, I got 16-18'' streamers from an 11'' high coil with a fullbridge of IRFP450s, running with halfwave rectified mains on the bridge.

@ Anders M.
Were you running 120V or 240V?
If someone could point me in the right direction to calculate the coupling of the primary to secondary it would be greatly appreciated. I've been looking, and haven't been able to come up with much.
