Well, I am surprised, Rich.
Not surprised that X-rays are produced by unwinding 'Sellotape,' but that they have energy sufficient to penetrate the bell jar, the air intervening between the jar and the G-M tube, the G-M tube window, and so on.
It's rather a pity you were unable to use a transducer more suitable for X-ray measurement than a G-M sensor.
If we knew the keVage (! ) of the rays, we would better be able to understand their origin.

My hands have been full, just getting the vacuum apparatus to work. When there is time for my -own- x-ray hobby, you can be sure I shall be properly quantitative. But -- here is the setup from the original Nature paper, using the same model GM instrument as I used: and here is their vacuum system -- perhaps a wee bit fancier than ours?

Thanks for that, Rich. It does seem remiss that the original experimenters didn't use an X-ray spectrometer, where all the characteristic emission peaks and bremsstrahlung would have been laid out, so one could better understand the mechanism of the phenomenon. That's what I'd do, anyhow!
