Last night (August 2nd) we had a number of violent electrical storms blow up near my house in central Georgia. I've been chasing storms for more than 10 years, and I've seen some pretty incredible storms out in the plains of Oklahoma and Kansas, but the electrical activity in these storms made my past chases look mediocre.

I took ~375 photos over the course of about 90 minutes. As a testament to the frequency and quality of lightning, more than 30 images turned out. A 10% 'keep rate' in lightning photography is rare.

Exposure times varied from 5 to 20 seconds, with an aperture ranging from F8-F11. As the storm moved away I started using longer exposures at a lower F-stop.

There are some real noise problems on a few of the images. I don't use noise canceling on the camera itself, and the filters I applied in photoshop to some of the photos caused a little distortion and did little to help the noise. I'll be uploading fixed images later today.

Additional photos can be seen Here.

This first photo was while the storm's updraft base was still very close. Just before this photo was taken I had experienced penny sized hail and a 71mph measured wind gust that nearly tore down a billboard nearby. I missed opportunities to photograph 4 separate transformer explosions caused by lightning strikes. 2 occurred out of frame, and 2 occurred while the shutter wasn't open.

The remaining 3 photos in this bunch are all as the updraft base moved away. One storm about 20 miles to my west was producing lightning at a rate in excess of 95 strokes per minute for a solid 10 minute period, and 60+ strokes per minute for more than 45 minutes.

Hope you enjoy the photos.

Whoa Nik, this first pic, by judging on tree sizes, is this thunder a few dozen meters width?

The first one was a 1/4 second exposure, so its not even the full intensity. It was the second loudest strike Ive ever heard (hit the house next door a while ago, scared the hell out me)
