Extrapolation of wire current ratings

Electricians rule of thumb, if its continuous load then its 14awg for 10amps or less, 12awg for 10-20 and 10awg for 20-30 amps. If you stick to that you won't burn down your house.

One thought is that say 14AWG at 10A for electricians usually means 120VAC, how can I extrapolate down to 20V, or is current independent of voltage for resistive heating.....?

No, voltage doesnt matter. Power dissipated by resistive heating is P=I^2*R

I knew all that highschool physics stuff would have come in handy one day..... Thats what I get for being a chemistry major... :D

Power supply is just finished, and I can't find a load safe enough to run for 6A, and no 10A fuses around either.... Any ideas for dummy loads?

Try two car headlamp filament bulbs in series.

Where I work we use all kinds of filament lamps as loads. They're cheap and give a quick indication.
the surge of current at switch-on due to the filament being cold is a good test of a psu.
(equivalent to capacitance as a load at switch-on)
